Bollywood stars enjoy Shobhana’s dance drama

Renowned actress and danseuse Shobhana plays a new role of the villainous king Ravana in her dance musical Maya Ravan.This play showcases a great combination of dignified tradition and cosmopolitan outlook.

Shobhana chose to play the ten-headed demon king of Lanka because of his awe-inspiring personality. Inspired by Ashok Banker’s Ramayana series, Shobana beautifully interwove the myriad emotions of love, lust, deceit, anger, valour and sorrow in this production.

“He was handsome, he was an artist, he was a painter, he loved the arts, used to play the isnstrument called Veena and was a great devotee of Lord Shiva,” Shobhana says.

“We have used the gestures of Bharatnatyam, we have used gestures of Mohiniattam, film dancing and Kathakali. It brings out the spirit of the Ramayana,” Shobhana explains.

Maya Ravan is Shobhana’s pet project for the last two years. Maya Ravan had a lot of celebrities behind it. The dialogues were by Naseeruddin Shah, Revathi Menon, Suhasini Maniratnam, Rohini, Milind Soman, Jackie Shroff, Sameer Sony and Shobana.

The show is in aid of the Society for Development, Research & Training (SFDRT) primarily involved with the children of sex workers and HIV infected children with AIDS. The fund raised is earmarked for improving and training the afflicted children including minor girls.

Shobana is an exponent of Bharatanatyam dance and a leading actress of South Indian motion pictures. She has received dance lessons from legendary Bharatanatyam dancers Chitra Visweswaran and Padma Subramaniam. She has performed around the world for which she has received numerous awards including Padma Sri, the highest civilian award in India for overall contribution to arts.

Shoaib Malik and Sayali Bhagat not a couple -- yet!

They look so good together that people are already talking about them being the perfect pair, but really they’ve seen so little of each other at this stage that they really need a bit more time together before the hyenas of the tabloid press start snapping at their heels.

Shoaib Malik, the Pakistan cricket captain, and former Miss India, Sayali Bhagat, first met up during the IPL cricket season and have been seeing each other whenever they can since then. Shoaib is trying to play down the relationship. "Sayali is a close and dear friend and that's about it," he says. Of course, it’s not unusual that at first in a relationship, it’s the woman that has to inject the most effort – it takes time, several decent meals and lots of ego-flattering to train a man – and certainly Sayali’s comments sound a bit more promising, “I believe when you want something from the heart — the whole universe conspires to get it for you,” she says wistfully.

Shoaib is more concerned at the moment with the outrageous decision of the ICC to cancel the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. "The postponement of the Champions Trophy was a big blow for us,” he explains, "But we have to leave it behind and get ready for the next assignment." That next assignment is a three-leg tournament in South Africa with Sri Lanka which will test his ability as the cricket captain.

Sayali made her debut opposite Emraan Hashmi in The Train. She had a demanding role as the mother to a very sick five-year-old and with a philandering husband. She will next be seen in Good Luck. How did she get to be Miss India? "My dream was always to become Miss India at school," she remembers, "The other kids would write about becoming an astronaut or a doctor, but I wrote about becoming Miss India. I decided to give it a shot after I had finished my 12th grade – you should always follow your dream. I had that long summer vacation, and so I thought why not? At first, there were about 3000 applications, so I didn’t really expect to get anywhere. But then 3000 became 150, and then 150 became 10 and then from the top 10 to the top 5, to the top 3. It all happened so quickly."

Scene by Scene: Ultimate Betrayal in 'Om Shanti Om'

Now it's my turn, and I've chosen to write about a scene that could have arguably been the turning point in a bright career. It is a scene from the recently released Om Shanti Om. The scene in question features Arjun Rampal as Mukesh, and Deepika Padukone as Shanti.

THE SCENE:
Shanti has just broken the news to Mukesh - she's pregnant with his child. She's ready to start a family with him, and he seems to feel the same way. Mukesh shows Shanti a grand new set he has had built and tells Shanti that it will be the venue for their marriage. He promises her a lavish wedding with a huge orchestra, a fountain flowing with champagne, and a beautiful chandelier. But suddenly the tides turn and Mukesh lets Shanti know how he really feels. He blames her for not being able to make his movie and having to burn down his beautiful set. So he says that she must burn along with it.

WHY IT'S SO SPECIAL:
I've always wanted to give Arjun Rampal the benefit of the doubt, that he could actually act convincingly when he needed to. This scene proved that to me. You grow to hate the character of Mukesh, which is what you're supposed to do. Arjun just jumps right into the role, especially in this scene. Farah Khan even mentions in her directors commentary that Deepika was actually scared in this scene because Arjun was performing it so convincingly. Her expressions in the scene are real, because Arjun was really scaring her.

Performing a villainous role is not easy. I feel it's harder to really get into the character if it's someone you aren't used to being in real life. Considering that, Arjun's done a wonderful job in this scene and in the rest of Om Shanti Om, and I hope this paves the way for this talented actor.

Shahana Goswami in Randeep Hooda's Ru-Ba-Ru

Shahana Goswami is pleased to be getting a big role opposite Randeep Hooda in Ru-Ba-Ru. "Although I have been noticed in whatever I did before – such as my debut in Naseeruddin Shah’s Yun Hota To Kya Hota and in Honeymoon Travel’s Pvt Ltd, they were very small roles."

Shahana is also currently appearing in the big hit Rock On!!, where she pulls off a very difficult role, and is one of the three leads in Nandita Das’ directorial debut, Firaaq. "When I made my debut in Bollywood, I didn't come with sky high expectations," she says, "The only goals that I set myself were that whatever I do, I should do it with conviction. I wanted to do a variety of work and not be typecast."

How did Shahana feel about the whopping TEN intimate kissing scenes with Randeep in the new movie? "A kiss is an eternal sign of romance and love. We had to get the intimacy and chemistry right. It was a part of my job and Randeep is a thorough professional," she explains coyly.

Shahana is clearly a very deep person and says her favourite movie is Lars Von Triers’ extraordinarily intimate Breaking The Waves. She also says her favourite actor is Johnny Depp because he is so silent and subdued in real life and she’s intrigued by what makes him so.

Shahana has been patient in the early days of her career but with her undoubted talent and sincerity, now seems to be the right time for her to start taking the lead.

Bond Girl Denise in 'Kambakht Ishq' with Akshay Kumar

The sensuous, sultry actress of Hollywood is being wooed by Bollywood producer Sajid Nadiadwala for his film Kambakht Ishq .

Sajid is pulling out all the stops to make ‘Kambakht Ishq’ one of the biggest Bollywood projects in the offing. Just last week he signed Hollywood stalwart Sylvester Stallone for a cameo in the film that has Akshay Kumar playing the lead role of a Hollywood stuntman.

ow, if reports are to be believed, Nadiadwala is in final negotiations with Denise Richards – the hottie from films like ‘The Wild Things’ and ‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’ – to play a role in his production.

The model-turned-actress will have a brief but significant role that will reportedly be shot over a period of about 10 days at Universal Studios in Los Angeles.

However, an official confirmation of Denise’s presence in the film is still awaited.

Ameesha Patel as the elegant bride on ‘Verve’

Amisha Patel who did so well in the otherwise disappointing Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic is the dream girl on the front cover of September Verve’s bridal special. Amisha’s name, by the way, is a combination of her father and mother’s, Amit and Asha.

American-educated Amisha appeared in Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. last year and has had a strong career in movies such as Kaho Naa Pyar Hai, for which she won a Best Debut Award, Gadar:Ek Prem Katha, which gained her a Special Performance Award, Humraaz, which won her a nomination for Best Actress, Elaan, the wonderful Mangal Pandey: The Rising, Ankahee, Heyy Babyy and Bhool Bhulaiyaa. She will soon be seen in Run Bhola Run opposite Govinda and Chatur Singh Two Star with Sanjay Dutt.

Amisha recently performed along with Rakhi Sawant at the Airtel Salaam-E-Comedy Awards which were presented by Ranvir Shorey and Suresh Menon. Her slim new look has been attributed to her new interest in spinning, or studio cycling, which she does regularly.

Amisha is friendly at the moment with London-based Kanav Puri and they recently had a holiday together in South Africa where she has been filming Chatur Singh Two Star. They saw Table Top Mountain and the Cape of Good Hope together. Amisha says her life has been filled with happiness since she met Kanav so the signs are good!
